A heat pump is a compressor/condenser unit that has the ability to reverse the air conditioning process. Instead of extracting heat from the house and expelling it to the atmosphere as it does in summer, a heat pump in winter extracts heat from the winter atmosphere (yes there is heat in winter air) and conducts it to the interior of the house.
