For an average three-bedroom home in a northern climate with seasonably cold winters, you need a minimum of a 100,000 BTU furnace. Square feet, the quality and depth of insulation, windows and ceiling height all affect BTU needs, so take all that into consideration when ordering.
All our 100,000 BTU gas furnaces have excellent AFUE ratings, which will save you substantially on energy costs. AFUE stands for Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency, which compares a product’s performance against the amount of fuel it used to achieve that level of performance.
The 100,000 BTU furnaces in our stock range from 80% AFUE to 97% AFUE. When you consider a 100,000 BTU furnace, price is of course a consideration, but don’t forget fuel efficiency. You stand to save substantial amounts of money on gas bills over the years.
Installation space is also a consideration, because a furnace of this size needs a bit of space in which to operate. For this reason, we have units in three different orientations – upflow, downflow and horizontal flow. This way, you can adapt the furnace to the space, or to the ductwork already in place.
Cold-starting furnaces with their early-morning drafts are all but done away with, thanks to multi-speed blower motors that deliver heat at a rate appropriate for the temperature. A multi-speed blower motor has two, sometimes more, set speeds. A variable speed blower motor is more like a volume knob, with an infinite number of speeds.
Similarly, the gas burners can be regulated to provide the best levels of heat for the situation. Single stage burners employ an all-on or all-off approach, which can sometimes result in abrupt changes in room temperature. Two stage burners can run at full capacity or reduced capacity (usually about 60%). This produces more even heating. Modulating furnaces take the process a step further, incorporating even more precise settings.
