The primary responsibility of a damper is to regulate the air flow to a zone in the home. They can be installed at the same time as ductwork or they can be later connected to existing ductwork. By installing a damper, the home is divided into multiple heating and cooling zones. Depending on the damper you select, either a circular or rectangular plate at the center of the damper will open or close to permit or block air flow. When a damper is closed, the blocked air is pushed into other areas of the home. Thus zones with open dampers heat or cool fast, but with less work from the furnace. Zone panels are used to tell the dampers when to open and when to close. Dampers are energy efficient as they prevent the heating and cooling system from working overtime to heat or cool parts of the home that are unoccupied.
