When the mini split concept first came, it was seen as a way to isolate one room in the house for individualized climate control. It was great for rooms without ductwork, plus add-on rooms, remodeled rooms and rooms that needed a little extra (or sometimes a little less) AC than the rest of the house. But now, with multi-zone capabilities, you can create zones throughout the house, each one independent of the other, each with its own thermostat.

In terms of air conditioning potential, a 42,000 BTU mini split AC is one of the big boys! A Mitsubishi mini split system is a sight to behold, with a single powerful compressor/condenser unit outside, serving up to five zones in the house without breaking a sweat. Each zone has its own air handler and each air handler has its own thermostat. If you have family members who squabble over thermostat settings, this can be a real peacemaker!

On the left column of this category is a list of numbers separated by addition signs. Each number represents an air handler within the mini split system. Two numbers mean two air handlers ship with that system. The number itself indicates the BTU rating of that air handler (times 1000), so 15 + 24 means that system includes two air handlers, one rated at 15,000 BTUs and one rated at 24,000 BTUs. The number in parentheses indicates how many systems are available in that configuration.

An average room requires 6,000 BTUs for full climate control, but there are factors that increase the need, such as larger than average rooms, rooms with large windows or high ceilings or rooms that aren’t well insulated. Be sure to carefully assess your needs when planning your purchase.

Most of these mini split systems include a heat pump that operates the air conditioning in reverse during cold weather, extracting heat from the atmosphere and sending it to the air handler for distribution indoors. These work quite well with mini split systems, and depending on your locale, they likely will provide all the heat your home would need in the winter.

The SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating) on these units is impressive, ranging from 15 SEER to 21 SEER. These ratings mean your system’s run time will be reduced, resulting in substantial energy savings over the course of a year.
