What is a Hybrid system?​

A Hybrid HVAC system is a complete HVAC solution that pairs a high efficiency electric heat pump with a traditional gas furnace. The heat pump provides efficient cooling during the summer and heating during mild winter weather, while the furnace provides heating on the coldest days.​

Dual fuel systems are excellent for climates that get the full range of temperatures from the coldest winters to the hottest summers. 

Components of a Hybrid System:

Furnace & Coil

When outdoor temperatures drop, the system switches to the gas furnace, which distributes heat generated by burning natural gas or propane. Meanwhile, the coil, or evaporator coil, assists both the gas furnace and air conditioning system by absorbing heat during cooling and aiding in heat transfer during heating.

Heat Pump

During milder weather conditions, the heat pump operates to provide both heating and cooling. In heating mode, the heat pump extracts heat from the outdoor air and transfers it indoors to heat the home. This process is energy-efficient and cost saving. 

How it works

Set the Auto-Switch Temperature

The outdoor temperature sensor automatically signals your thermostat to switch from the electric heat pump to the traditional gas furnace based on the temperature you set as the balance point.

Electric Heat Pump Operation

The energy-efficient electric heat pump operates when the temperature exceeds the personal auto-switch temperature. For example, if your personal temperature setting is at 10°F, then anything at 11°F or above will be powered by an electric heat pump. This serves to provide a greener HVAC system with lower energy costs.

Gas-Powered Backup Heating

When the outdoor temperature sensors register a temperature lower than the personal auto-switch temperature, the system switches from the electric heat pump to the gas-powered furnace to combat the cooler environment. For example, if your personal temperature settting is at 10°F, then anything at or below 9°F will be powered by a gas furnace.
