Can a wood burning buck insert be converted to gas burning?

No, a wood burning fireplace or stove cannot be converted into a gas fireplace or stove. Attempting to install a gas appliance into a wood insert is dangerous and not advised as a wood burning system is designed for small amounts of air for combustion and gas systems need excessive amounts of air. You would need to replace the entire insert with one that is suitable for a gas fire.
