Can you use this unit in the wall if it has four inches of space on its sides?

This room air conditioner is designed for double-hung windows with actual opening widths of 28 inches to 42 inches. Side louvers and the rear of the air conditioner must have clear air space to allow enough airflow through the condenser for heat removal.
