What is the difference between a mini split and a regular split?

Traditional split systems are called so because they usually have an indoor unit and an outdoor unit. In a traditional split system, these two components will be connected by ductwork. The mini split systems also have an outdoor and indoor unit. The air handler goes inside and the condenser outside. Rather than using ductwork, they are connected via line sets and are all electric.
