How do the heat pump and electric heater work together?

This PTAC uses a heat pump as the primary heating source during mild to moderate outdoor temperatures. When outdoor conditions become too cold for efficient heat pump operation, the built-in 3.5kW electric heater automatically provides supplemental heat to maintain indoor comfort.
