Is this a heat pump unit or only a direct heat unit? Can it be installed through the wall or does it have to be in the window?

This is not a heat pump. It is an air conditioner with an electric heat strip built in for heating. The unit can be installed through a wall provided that the wall is not so thick that it obstructs the side louvers. Instructions for both window and wall installations are provided in the installation manual, which both comes with the unit and can be found on the product's webpage.
