The 28 7/8" depth, how much of that is past the fireplace opening and sits on the hearth?

The insert requires a minimum distance inside of the fireplace of 15 ½”. 28 7/8”-15 ½ = 13 3/8”+/- on the hearth. That is the furthest point as well, generally the ash lip or the stove top.
