What is the difference between a single stage furnace and a two stage furnace?

Burner stages dictate how many operational settings your furnace has. A single stage furnace just has two settings - On and off. A two stage furnace has the same as a single stage, but it also has a middle setting for days when not as much heat is needed in your home.
