Direct-fired heaters burn gas directly within the supply airstream, delivering nearly 100% thermal efficiency without needing a heat exchanger or flue stack. Indirect-fired units use a heat exchanger to keep combustion gases separate from supply air, which lowers efficiency to around 80–82%.
