Read our privacy policyThe Aprilaire Model 5000 Electronic Air Cleaner is a whole-home air filtration system that installs directly into your HVAC ductwork. It captures dust, pollen, mold spores, pet dander, and smoke particles as air passes through the system, so contaminants get pulled out of circulation instead of moving room to room.
Portable room purifiers only clean the space they sit in. Because the Model 5000 works through your existing supply and return ducts, every room served by your furnace or air handler gets the same filtered air, with no equipment taking up floor space and nothing running in your living areas.
Air entering the cabinet passes an ionizing section that puts an electrical charge on every particle in the stream. Those charged particles then hit 72 square feet of Model 501 media and stick to it, the same way a charged balloon grabs onto a wall. Because the particles are held electrically as well as mechanically, they stay put instead of working loose and blowing back into your ductwork.
That combination is what earns the Model 5000 its MERV 16 rating. It traps 80% of virus-sized particles down to 0.01 microns, 94% of bacteria-sized particles at 0.35 microns, and 99% of pollen, mold, and spore-sized particles.
Older plate-type electronic air cleaners use metal collector cells that have to be pulled, soaked, and scrubbed every few months, and they tend to snap and pop as they arc. The Model 5000 does neither. Annual service means replacing the 501 media and wiping down the ionizing wires and control electrode, and the unit runs silently the rest of the year.
A filter this efficient does more than clean the air you breathe. Dust that gets past a standard 1-inch filter settles on your evaporator coil and blower wheel, where it insulates the coil and drags down heat transfer. Keeping that buildup out of the system helps your equipment hold its rated efficiency and reduces the service calls that come from a dirty coil or an out-of-balance blower.
The Model 5000 is rated for airflow up to 2,000 CFM and suits 1 to 5 ton residential systems. Resistance with new media runs 0.10" w.g. at 1,000 CFM and 0.29" w.g. at 2,000 CFM, so it adds very little static pressure to a properly sized duct system. The cabinet is heavy-gauge galvanized steel with an electrostatic painted finish, roughly 18-1/4" tall by 12" wide, rated to support a 400 lb static load, and it uses 16" x 25" media. The unit runs on 120VAC and draws no more than 60 watts. Aprilaire requires installation by a qualified HVAC contractor.
Aprilaire backs the Model 5000 with a five-year warranty from the date of installation against defects in materials and workmanship. The warranty does not cover the disposable media or inner housing seals, and it requires installation by a qualified heating and air conditioning contractor. Register the unit with Aprilaire to activate coverage.
