42” exhaust fan works great

I bought the 42” Canarm exhaust fan for my 50 x 60 x 16’ shop. This ventilates the shop perfectly. The fan removes fumes, cools it down and provides a good breeze. You can hold a normal conversation while it’s on. It’s a little more noticeable than a 50” barrel fan but moves 4 times more air. I usually open one 14’ garage door on the opposite end of the shop 18” to 24” and there’s a breeze 12 to 15 mph coming in, enough to blow dust across the floor. For winter when it’s rarely used, I made a housing on the interior of the shop with an insulated insert to keep the cold air out. Wind blown rain will slightly get through the louvers of the fan if it is off so I drilled a couple of holes in the lowest spots for it to drain. Overall it’s a great fan and I would buy another.

FAQ's

Customer Questions

I want to know more about Canarm as a brand. Are their fans reliable?

Absolutely! Canarm is a trusted manufacturer of ventilation, industrial, and HVAC fans. Their SD series is one of their most popular lines, available in multiple sizes and speeds. Each fan is built with a durable steel housing, powder-coated finish, and backed with reliable parts support and warranty coverage to give you peace of mind.

What materials are used for the fan housing and finish?

This fan is built to last with a strong welded steel housing and a durable powder-coated finish. It features aluminum or PVC louvers (depending on size), shutters with long-lasting nylon bushings, and chrome-plated or powder-coated guards for added protection.

Will running these fans all day use a lot of electricity?

Not at all! SD fans are built to be energy-efficient. Variable speed models let you run them at lower speeds to save power, and even the single or two-speed options are cost-effective compared to running several smaller fans or overusing your HVAC system.

What kind of controller or speed options are available?

We offer SD fans with two-speed motors, variable speed motors, and compatible controllers. You can use wall switches, toggle switches, or optional variable speed controllers to fine-tune your airflow. If you’re not sure which controller is best for your space, feel free to contact us, we’ll be happy to help!

What maintenance does the fan require?

Maintenance is simple! Just clean the blades and louvers regularly to prevent buildup, check that the louvers open and close freely, and make sure all mounting hardware and guards stay tight. Inspect the blade assembly screws occasionally to keep your fan running smoothly.

Are the shutters on the SD24 line of fans sealed good? I am looking something to use in a cold climate & do not want un-necessary air drafting in when not in use.

The SD24 fan uses a tightly closing, gravity-assisted aluminum shutter system designed to minimize backdrafts when the fan is not in use. While the shutters are not completely air-tight like an insulated damper, they close securely and significantly reduce cold air infiltration and drafts. For very cold climates, many customers pair the fan with an insulated backdraft damper for added protection. This shutter design from Canarm is well-suited for cold-weather applications where limiting unwanted airflow is important.
