- mrcool 18k 5th gen problemsThis 5th gen mini split seems much flimsier than the 3rd gen I installed 4 years ago. I encountered several problems during install, where the 3rd gen was a breeze to install. The problems were:
- 2.5 inch sleeve prevents the inside unit from mounting flush to wall
- manual is inaccurate and missing important information
- numbers on wires are impossible to see with the naked eye, needed a magnifier
- one bolt mount is hidden by the frame which makes it a pain to screw in the bolt
- copper fittings on compressor were loose
The 3rd gen unit didn't have any of these problems.

- Great valueI purchased this 18k unit for my shop space in a separate building in Michigan. The installation was very straightforward, mostly an "attach and connect" process. Overall the unit seems of acceptable quality, and I was able to get it installed and up and running in two mornings, about 9-10 hours start to finish. Lots of plastic and fairly thin metal fabrications, but it appears to be durable enough to do the job. I installed mine using a wall bracket for the exterior unit, sourced at lower cost through a different online source. The information for this unit does not clearly state that the through-the-wall flange is included with the unit; I purchased a separate item and then found one in the compressor unit box when everything arrived. That said, the one I bought was better quality than the one included with the unit, so I went with the aftermarket one. The installation manual is very thorough, but it is written in a different sequence than what made sense to me, and different than the many online installation videos, so I did not follow the sequence in the manual exactly. Besides that, the installation was very straightforward and resulted in a great working unit. The only installation issue I had was with the wiring to the exterior unit. The provided black "cable clamp/retainer" was totally useless - not properly spaced nor located where it would do any good, so I went without.
I would definitely do this again and purchase the same unit if I had this to do again in the future. Now that it is installed, I am hopeful it will be durable enough to give me years of good service. I cannot really evaluate the "Service" aspect as I did not rely on any services as part of the installation. The five starsPosted on
