It shares the same cabinet, motor, and medical grade HEPA as the standard HealthMate, but the carbon canister is different, and that difference is the whole reason this model exists. Coverage runs up to 1,500 sq. ft. at two air changes per hour, or about 700 sq. ft. if you want four changes per hour in a room with a heavier chemical load.
Inside is 15 lbs. of activated carbon, potassium iodide impregnated carbon, and mineral-based media. Regular activated carbon handles odors and general gases well, but it struggles with formaldehyde, ammonia, benzene, and acrolein. Impregnating the carbon with potassium iodide is what closes that gap. Those are the compounds that come off new carpet, pressed wood furniture, fresh paint, adhesives, nail and salon products, tobacco smoke, wildfire smoke, and traffic exhaust. If you have moved into new construction, remodeled recently, live near a highway or industrial area, or deal with chemical sensitivity, this is the Austin Air to buy.
The rest of the machine is the proven HealthMate platform. Air pulls in through 360-degree perforated steel grilles on all four sides, passes through two pre-filters, the carbon canister, and 60 sq. ft. of true medical grade HEPA. A 3-speed dial handles operation, running quiet enough for a bedroom on low and up to 400 CFM on high. Casters come standard, the bottom plate lifts off for filter changes, and the filter pack is rated for up to five years of normal residential use. Assembled in Buffalo, New York.
