The Austin Air HealthMate in Black is a whole-room air cleaner for people who want the filtration doing the work instead of the electronics. It is rated for spaces up to 1,500 sq. ft. at two air changes per hour, so a single unit covers a master bedroom, a living room, a finished basement, or most of a small apartment. The black powder coat reads closer to audio equipment than appliance, which helps it sit unnoticed in darker rooms and alongside media furniture.

Filtration runs in four stages behind a 360-degree intake, meaning air enters through perforated grilles on every side of the cabinet instead of one front panel. A large particle pre-filter takes dust, hair, and pet dander first. A medium particle pre-filter follows for pollen, mold, and spores. From there air passes through 15 lbs. of granular activated carbon and zeolite, then finishes at 60 sq. ft. of true medical grade HEPA. Dividing the work this way keeps coarse debris off the HEPA media, which is a big part of why the filter pack lasts as long as it does.

Controls are one 3-speed dial. Low is quiet enough to leave running overnight in a bedroom, and high pushes up to 400 CFM when wildfire smoke or allergy season calls for it. The permanent split capacitor motor sits on shock-absorbing mounts and is built for continuous duty rather than short bursts.
