High-Efficiency Goodman Heat Pumps

Posted in: All Posts
A Goodman heat pump is a device that transfers heat from one point to another. Typically, a heat pump has four main components: a condenser, an expansion valve, an evaporator, and a compressor. These parts all use a refrigerant to either heat or cool your home. Keep reading to find out more about how a heat pump is good your home, the environment, and your pocketbook.

Cooling Your Home with a Heat Pump

Even though its name may seem to indicate otherwise, you can use a heat pump to cool your home as well as heat it. Here’s how it works. When the temperature within your home is high, and the heat pump is set to cool it, the pump’s heat exchanger absorbs the warm air and transfers it to the refrigerant liquid running through the coils. When the refrigerant absorbs this energy, it changes state from liquid to gas and moves through the evaporator to the exterior of the home. The evaporator has many aluminum or copper plates and coils through which the refrigerant gas runs, and because these materials are good conductors, they rapidly dissipate the heat from the refrigerant into the atmosphere. After the pump dispels all of the heat it has absorbed, the refrigerant changes state back from a gas into a liquid; the liquid refrigerant is then pumped back to the heat exchanger in the home where the cycle starts all over again. It is common to have a fan which blows air through the copper or aluminum plates to make them dissipate the heat even more rapidly; this is called forced cooling.

Heating Your Home with a Heat Pump

HVAC SystemsIn this second scenario, the temperature in the home is colder than is preferred. In this case, the heat pump transfers heat from outside of the home to inside, and the direction of the refrigerant is now reversed. The refrigerant absorbs heat from outside, changing state from a liquid into a gas and moves on to the heat exchanger within the home where it transfers its heat energy to the colder environment.

After dissipating the heat, the refrigerant changes state from gas back to liquid, and the pump forces the liquid refrigerant back to the evaporator on the exterior of the home. This cycle continues again until the required temperature is achieved. It is also possible to have a forced air system in this case.

Heatpumps and Energy Efficiency

As you may have noticed, a heat pump does not use any fuel to generate heat. Instead of creating heat, heat pumps simply transfer heat from one place to another making this method of heating extremely efficient. The only energy consumption required for a heat pump is the electrical needed to run the pump mechanism and the fans. The Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating or SEER is responsible for all energy ratings for heat pumps. SEER measures the heat pumps performance over the course of one year, taking into account all the temperature variations in that year. It is the most universally accepted rating because it takes into account performance over the entire season.

High-Efficiency Goodman Heat Pumps

Goodman is a well-known and highly efficient heat pump brand. Two of the most popular Goodman heat pumps are as follows:

GSZ14

This is the most popular brand. It has a SEER value of 14 and an average price range of $1,500. This brand is a favorite of homeowners because it is not only very efficient, but it is also budget-friendly. Goodman can afford to sell their heat pumps at such great prices because they produce straightforward, functional equipment and don’t waste time or money on fancy, but ultimately superfluous, features. Additionally, the simplicity of operating a Goodman heat pump means that there are fewer parts to breakdown and their no-frills design approach provides you with a heat pump that gives you the service you require with minimal maintenance costs.

DSZC16

This heat pump has a SEER value of 16 and an average price range of $2,100. The DSZC16 is optimized for operation in the coastal region and has additional features over the GSZ14 model such as the ability to withstand high corrosion and high humidity environments. All models of Goodman heat pumps are friendly to the environment because they don't need the direct combustion of fossil fuels like natural gas or propane. In terms of installation, heat pumps are cheaper to install than gas furnaces. The Goodman line of heat pumps have a solid reputation in the industry, and all their products are guaranteed to perform within given specifications and provide you with the service you need. While you can choose to purchase a different brand heat pump with a higher SEER value, this only provides you with extra capacity that you honestly don't need at a higher cost than you would spend on a Goodman. Goodman heat pumps give you exactly what you need with a no-fluff approach.
