PREFABRICATED / ZERO CLEARANCE WOOD FIREPLACES

Prefabricated, Zero Clearance, or "ZC" wood burning fireplaces are factory built steel fireboxes designed and safety tested to be installed into a wood framed cavity. Due to the same functionality and only costing a fraction of the cost to install, they have become the standard type of wood fireplace installed into new construction, renovations, and additions. The inner firebox is lined with a high temperature refractory material to insulate and create a realistic masonry appearance. There is an outer shell around this cavity with an air space in between to lower the temperature of the outer shell. These fireplaces require the contractor to be mindful of clearances around the face of the fireplace as well as on the floor out in front. Most fireplaces will have the option of glass doors and outside air kits to meet code where necessary.

Customer Questions
Can a blower be added to this fireplace?
A blower is not an option for this fireplace.
Where can a zero clearance wood burning fireplace be installed?
A zero clearance wood burning fireplace is designed for installation in new construction or remodeling projects where a traditional masonry fireplace isn't practical. These units are commonly installed in framed walls with adequate spacing, making them a versatile option for adding real wood heat to a variety of home layouts.
Is a wood burning zero clearance fireplace more affordable than a masonry fireplace?
Yes, wood burning zero clearance fireplaces are generally more cost-effective than traditional masonry fireplaces. These factory-built units require less labor and materials, and they’re easier to install, especially in new construction or remodeling projects. Masonry fireplaces, on the other hand, involve custom brick or stone work and a full chimney structure, which significantly increases overall cost.
Do I need a masonry chimney for a zero clearance fireplace?
No, you do not need a masonry chimney for a zero clearance fireplace. These fireplaces are designed to be used with a Class A insulated or air-colled chimney system, which safely vents high-temperature exhaust through the roof. This makes zero clearance fireplaces a flexible and cost-effective alternative to traditional masonry fireplaces that require heavy, labor-intensive chimney construction.
Do I need an outside air kit for a zero clearance wood fireplace?
Yes, most zero clearance wood fireplaces require an outside air kit, especially in modern tightly sealed homes. An outside air kit supplies combustion air directly from outside, improving performance, preventing backdrafts, and helping the fireplace operate safely and efficiently. Always check the manufacturer’s requirements, as many zero clearance models will not function properly without one.
How much heat can I expect from a wood burning fireplace?
Heat output from a wood burning fireplace varies depending on the type of fireplace you choose. Traditional open-burning fireplaces are ideal for creating ambiance and a cozy atmosphere, but they are not designed for efficient home heating—much of the heat escapes through the chimney. High-efficiency wood fireplaces, such as EPA-certified or zero clearance models, are built to retain and distribute heat more effectively and can heat areas ranging from 1,500 to over 2,500 square feet. If your goal is both warmth and ambiance, a high-efficiency model offers the best of both worlds.
