What We Need From You

The questions to answer are the same standard questions you may be asked by a contractor. Please note that not every combination may be available. All systems are multi-positional and utilize R32 refrigerant. The included condenser will be a 14.3 SEER2 model unless you specify a higher SEER2 rating in the Condenser Upgrades section. If there are any issues with the selections you have provided, we will reach out to you to ensure that the system you receive is suitable for your home. For more information on each question, please see below:

Condenser Tonnage

A heat pump condenser's tonnage is a measure of how much warm or cool air it can produce. Tonnage scales upward with house sizes, with 3 ton being the typical size for most houses. Please note that other factors may affect the ideal tonnage your house needs.

  • 1.5 and 2 Ton - Ideal for small houses
  • 2.5 Ton - Ideal for small to medium-sized houses
  • 3 and 3.5 Ton - Ideal for medium-sized houses
  • 4 Ton - Ideal for medium to large houses
  • 5 Ton - Ideal for large houses

Air Handler Cabinet Width

Modern air handlers have a standardized cabinet width of either 14", 17.5", 21", and 24.5". Simply measure the width of the face of your current air handler to determine what width you need. Note: 14" wide air handlers are uncommon for most heat pump system configurations. If your setup requires a 14" wide air handler, please give us a call and our team will help you out.

Electric Heat Options

Supplemental electric heat kits are an optional add-on for the system's air handler. They provide heat during colder days that fall below the heat pump's usual temperature threshold for operating (around 35°F). If you live in an area where the temperature may fall below that threshold, consider purchasing a heat kit with your system.

  • 5 Kilowatts - Produces 16,200 BTUs of heat.
  • 8 Kilowatts - Produces 23,800 BTUs of heat.
  • 10 Kilowatts - Produces 34,100 BTUs of heat.
  • 15 Kilowatts - Produces 51,150 BTUs of heat.
  • 19 and 20 Kilowatts - Produces 64,800 and 68,200 BTUs of heat, respectively. The 19kW kit is used in air handlers that are incompatible with the 20kW model. Please note that these kits are incompatible with 1.5 - 2.5 ton options.

Condenser Upgrades

These options are not mandatory for any specific type of home. They are provided for those that want greater efficiency and more precise control over their heat pump system.

  • 15.2 SEER2 Upgrade - A 15.2 SEER2 condenser will provide you with improved energy savings over the 14.3 SEER2 condenser provided by default.
  • 17 SEER2 Upgrade with Variable Speed - Choosing this option will not only provide you with Goodman's highest SEER2-rated traditional heat pump condenser that comes with two-stage functionality, but you will also receive a variable speed air handler as well. This option is only available for 2, 3, 4, and 5 ton systems. Please be sure to select the correct tonnage when choosing this upgrade.

Customer Questions
How can I find an installer?
It’s easier than you think – the key is to find an independent contractor or small company as opposed to a larger HVAC service. A one or two person outfit will do the work more quickly and cheaply than a bigger company, too. Yelp.com, Thumbtack.com, and Porch.com are websites are designed to help you connect with a professional in your area. You could also place a call to the last professional who did work on your home and see if they have any recommendations.
Where is Goodman HVAC equipment made?
Goodman HVAC equipment is manufactured in the United States. The company operates a large manufacturing facility in Houston, Texas, where it produces furnaces, air conditioners, and other HVAC products.
Can I mix and match different sizes or efficiencies when configuring my system?
Yes — our Build Your Own System tool lets you select all your equipment specifications in one streamlined process. If any selected combination isn’t viable or available, our team will reach out to ensure you receive a system that’s properly sized and compatible for your home and climate. Product efficiency standards will also be verified based on your shipping address to ensure compliance with regional regulations.
How do I determine the correct Air Conditioner size (BTUs/tons) for my home?
We recommend checking the tonnage listed on your current system’s data sticker, usually found on the outdoor condenser near the electrical disconnect box. Look for terms like “Model Number” or “M/N.” These details help identify BTU/tonnage and find a suitable replacement. For new construction, consult a contractor or perform a load calculation to ensure proper sizing and efficiency.
How do I choose the correct furnace or air handler's cabinet width?
Cabinet width refers to the physical size of a furnace or air handler's housing — typically 14.5", 17.5", 21", or 24.5" wide. Choosing the right width ensures the furnace fits your existing ductwork and coil cabinet. If you’re replacing an existing system, match the width of your old equipment for easiest installation. For new installations, consult your contractor or check your coil and plenum dimensions to determine the proper size.
