Choosing the Perfect Gas Log System to Create a Cozy Home Environment

Posted in: All Posts
In your quest to buy a gas fireplace online you may have come across gas logs for sale. In our discussion today, we will look at the options that are available and some of the advantages and disadvantages of these systems which can help you make an informed decision. A gas log system refers to a gas furnace made of a material that looks like wood which appears to be burning when the furnace is turned on. The logs in these systems are made of either ceramic clay or heat-resistant cement which is meant to withstand extremely high temperatures and resemble natural wood as closely as possible. Gas logs look great and can really give your home the warm, cozy feeling of sitting in front of a flickering fireplace without the headaches of burning real wood. Some advantages of gas logs over traditional wood-burning fireplaces include:
  • They provide the same ambiance as conventional wood-burning fireplaces but require less maintenance.
  • They eliminate the hassle of chopping timber to fuel the furnace.
  • Installation is very simple with prefabricated and free-standing units.
Selecting the right gas log system is important to provide you with cost-effective heating, increased aesthetic appeal, and ease of use. Here are a couple of options to consider when choosing your gas log system.

Deciding Between Built-in or Freestanding Gas Log Systems: Which Works for Your Space?

Gas Log SetsBuilt-in gas log systems are a viable option only if you're planning on constructing a new home where you can add a brick fireplace and chimney. Otherwise, this is a costly option, as adding a built-in system to an already existing home would require an entire renovation of the space to add a brick fireplace.

In comparison, freestanding gas log systems are prefabricated, lightweight units that are available for purchase in a variety of sizes and shapes. These systems are a much more reasonable choice for those looking to add a gas log system to their current space without remodeling.

Vented Gas Logs vs. Vent Free Gas Logs: Which is Your Best Solution?

Vented gas logs require a means whereby they can release the byproducts of combustion, such as heat, moisture, and carbon monoxide. In order to install a vented gas log system, you must have a space to create a vent, such as a chimney. Vent-less gas logs operate on the principle of efficient combustion and therefore do not need a vent because all carbon monoxide production is closely monitored, and mechanisms are in place to shut off the gas furnace should the carbon monoxide thresholds be reached. Both vented and vent free gas log systems have advantages and disadvantages. Your choice will depend on what is more important to you and which system meets those needs best.
  • Advantages of Vented Gas Log Systems:
    • Less expensive to buy compared to vent-less gas log systems
    • Provide better ambiance
    • You can operate a vented gas log system with a yellow flame because the carbon monoxide produced is vented out.
    • An oxygen depletion sensor is not required.
  • Disadvantages of Vented Gas Log Systems:
    • Less efficient because some of the heat is lost through the vent
    • More expensive to install
    • Requires more fuel for the same heating effect as a vent-less gas furnace
  • Advantages of Vent-Less Gas Log Systems:
    • More efficient heating
    • Better for the environment because of minimal carbon monoxide production
    • Less fuel required for the same heating effect as a vented gas log furnace
  • Disadvantages of Vent-Less Gas Log Systems:
    • Produces more moisture as a by-product of combustion, which increases humidity in the home.
    • Cannot be operated for long durations in enclosed spaces because they eventually deplete the oxygen in the room
    • Are illegal in some states like California. You should always confirm building codes in your area before purchasing a vent-less gas log system.
    • Operate with a blue flame which does not have the ambiance of a traditional yellow flamed furnace

Choosing Your Fuel: Natural Gas or Liquid Propane

When selecting a gas log system, you must consider which type of fuel is readily available in your area. The default is typically natural gas where possible, with, liquid propane used in areas that don't have natural gas lines. However, depending on your circumstances, you can choose either one.

Picking the Size Gas Log That is Right for Your Space

If you intend to place your new gas log fireplace in a pre-existing space, make sure you have the dimensions before completing your purchase. We recommend selecting a gas log system that leaves an allowance of five inches around the walls, and 12 inches along the top.
