Unlike traditional central AC systems that have one condenser and one air handler connected to a complex ductwork network, a mini split system includes a single condenser that serves multiple air handlers and most of these systems do not attach to ductwork at all. In that way, a ductless mini split 36,000 BTU system can provide climate control for up to four zones, each zone independent of the others.

With the right sizing and configuration, these systems can provide year-round comfort. Outfitted with a mini split heat pump, a 36,000 BTU system may not need any additional heat source, especially if the heat pump is Mitsubishi’s patented H2i Hyper Heat Pump.
The role of the heat pump is to extract heat from the atmosphere for distribution inside, but traditional heat pumps become ineffective at temperatures below 35° F. The problem has always been drafty air rather than insufficient heat. The Hyper Heat uses compressor speed regulation and fan speed regulation to allow heat to drift in to the system at a more comfortable rate, making it effective at temperatures as low as -15° F.
The chart of numbers on the left indicate how many air handlers come with the system and what their BTU rating is. For instance, a 9+12+18 means there are three air handlers – one rated at 9,000 BTUs, one at 12,000 BTUs and one at 18,000 BTUs. The number in parentheses indicates how many systems of that configuration we have available.
The base need of a normal size room is 6,000 BTUs, but you must add more capacity if the room is large, has a high ceiling, is poorly insulated or has a large window. Adjacent rooms can often be combined to make a zone.
