What is an ACiQ 5 zone mini split system?

ACiQ 5 zone mini split systems are multi room, ductless heating and air conditioning systems that link up to five independent indoor air handlers to a single, high-capacity outdoor heat pump condenser. They are designed to provide heating and cooling to five individual rooms or areas and are among ACiQ’s largest mini split systems.

These systems circulate refrigerant between the outdoor condenser and all five indoor air handlers to provide independent heating and cooling. During cooling, heat is transferred from inside the home to the outdoors, while in heating mode, the process reverses to bring heat inside. ACiQ's inverter-driven twin-rotary compressor automatically adjusts its output to match real-time demand across all five zones, delivering only the capacity needed and improving efficiency.

What spaces are best for ACiQ 5 zone mini split systems?

A 5 zone ductless configuration operates at peak efficiency in residential properties or commercial spaces with standard 8-foot ceiling heights, moderate insulation levels, and a combined structural footprint spanning between 1,500 and 3,000 square feet. Here are some common use cases:

  • Whole-Home Coverage in a Mid-Sized to Large House: A 5 room system is perfect for homes with layouts like four bedrooms and a living room, or three bedrooms, a home office, and a sunroom. Every occupied room gets its own set of controls, and zones that go unused during the day can be switched off without touching the settings anywhere else in the house. Their ductless design makes them especially well-suited for historic homes, which often lack ductwork.

  • In-Law Suites, Large Guest Wings, or Vacation Homes: A guest wing or in-law suite that goes unused for days at a time can be switched off as its own zone, saving energy without sacrificing comfort in the rest of the house. Vacation homes present a similar but even stronger case, since the whole property may sit empty for weeks at a time, and one of these systems lets you bring only the rooms you are actually using up to temperature when you arrive, rather than conditioning the entire home from the moment you walk in the door.

  • Spacious Multi-Level Homes: Heat rises, so in a multi-story home, the upper floor is almost always warmer than the main floor, which is almost always warmer than the basement, no matter where the central thermostat is set. A single thermostat tries to split the difference, satisfying nobody and leaving the upstairs too warm in summer and the basement too cold in winter. A 5 zone ACiQ system treats each level as its own independent space, so the basement can run warmer while the upper bedrooms run cooler at night, and nobody has to argue over the thermostat to get it right.

  • Homes with Additions or Renovations: A sunroom, garage conversion, guest suite, home office, or finished basement added onto an existing home almost never connects cleanly to the original ductwork, and extending it through finished walls and ceilings is expensive and disruptive. Each of those five added spaces gets its own dedicated indoor unit with nothing more than a small wall penetration for the refrigerant line and no ductwork required. Each zone runs on its own schedule independently of the rest of the home.

  • Segmented Commercial Offices and Storefronts: A reception area full of people, a private office, a breakroom, and a server room that needs to stay cool around the clock each have distinct conditioning needs that a single thermostat cannot manage effectively. This system gives each of the five areas of a small business its own independent settings, so every space runs at the temperature that actually makes sense for how it is used, rather than settling for whatever compromise a shared thermostat lands on.

External environmental conditions, including direct, unshaded roof solar exposure, degraded or missing wall insulation, drafty windows, and extreme sub-zero winter temperatures, can place additional thermal loads on these systems and diminish overall performance.

What BTU sizes are available for ACiQ 5 zone mini split systems?

ACiQ manufactures multi-zone mini split systems in several BTU capacities that accommodate up to 5 zones, including 36,000 BTU, 48,000 BTU, and 55,000 BTU systems, perfectly suited for whole-home climate control and multi-room applications. Individual air handlers range from 6,000 to 24,000 BTU and cover up to 1,500 square feet each.

  • 36,000 BTU (1,500 to 2,000 sq. ft.): This size works well for medium to large homes, multi-room suites, or large open-concept living areas where five independent zones of smaller to mid-size rooms can be covered from a single outdoor unit. Common configurations for the air handlers include 6k+6k+9k+9k+9k BTU and 9k+9k+9k+9k+9k BTU.

  • 48,000 BTU (2,000 to 2,700 sq. ft.): This capacity suits large houses, expansive basements, or multi-family spaces that need higher output across five zones, with one or more rooms carrying an above-average heat load. Common configurations include 9k+9k+9k+9k+12k BTU and 9k+9k+9k+12k+12k BTU mixes of indoor units.

  • 55,000 BTU (2,500 to 3,000 sq. ft.): This is ACiQ's highest-capacity 5 zone configuration and is suited for whole-home coverage, very large open spaces, or five-zone setups that require maximum heating and cooling output, available in both Standard and Extreme series. One of the most popular indoor unit setups at this capacity is 9k+9k+12k+12k+18k BTU, which pairs four standard-sized rooms with one larger zone, such as an open-plan living area or a spacious primary suite.

On HVACDirect.com, you can select the specific indoor unit BTU capacity for each room, allowing you to build a 5 zone ACiQ system that's tailored to your home's unique layout and heating and cooling needs.

How much do ACiQ 5 zone mini split systems cost?

A fully installed ACiQ 5-zone mini split system usually costs between $7,550 and $16,400. Here's a typical breakdown of equipment, installation, and ongoing maintenance costs:

  • Equipment Cost: $4,500 to $10,000+ for a complete system with one outdoor condenser and five indoor air handlers, depending on the BTU capacity, series, indoor unit types, and model.

  • Installation and Labor Cost: $3,000 to $8,000 for a professional HVAC contractor to properly mount the handlers, run the refrigerant lines, and commission the system.

  • Operation and Maintenance Cost: $150 to $420 per year, broken down by electricity expenses averaging $50 to $120 per month during peak seasons and professional maintenance/cleaning fees of $100 to $300 per year.

The final price may increase because of any accessories you choose, like line sets, control wires, drain hoses, and line set covers. These can add an extra $250 to $800.

Can I install an ACiQ 5 zone mini split system myself?

ACiQ does not have any 5 room systems that are marketed as pre-charged DIY models. It is best to have a licensed professional install the system. This ensures the system meets the manufacturer's warranty requirements.

  • DIY Installation: Pre-charged DIY units allow you to mount air handlers and set up the entire system yourself, but installing a multi zone ACiQ system, including any 5 room system, requires brazing copper lines, pressure testing, vacuuming the system, and handling refrigerant. These are tasks that require a licensed professional with specialized tools and EPA certification to complete.

  • Professional Installation: These systems must be installed by a licensed professional. Professionals have the exact tools required to pull a deep vacuum and guarantee that all zones operate correctly. Five zones involve more line routing, more wall penetrations, and more time than most other zone counts. A licensed professional can handle all of these and protect your warranty from being voided.

Proper installation of one of these systems requires mandatory building and HVAC permits, as well as dedicated high-voltage electrical circuits.

What indoor unit styles are available for ACiQ 5 zone mini splits?

ACiQ supports several indoor unit styles across their 5 zone configurations, including wall mount, ceiling cassette, slim ceiling cassette, concealed duct, and floor mount. Here are some specifics on when to use each:

  • Wall Mounted Air Handler: Wall mount units are a top pick for ACiQ 5 zone mini split systems. They work well in nearly any room of the home. They install high on the wall to provide even airflow, quiet operation, and dependable year-round comfort. This is usually the easiest and most cost-effective option for most homeowners.

  • Ceiling Cassette Air Handler: If you want one of your five indoor units to blend into the room, a ceiling cassette is an excellent option. It sits flush with the ceiling, leaving your walls free for furniture, artwork, or windows while distributing air evenly throughout the space. They're especially popular in open-concept living areas, kitchens, and home offices.

  • Slim Ceiling Cassette Air Handler: This style offers the same clean, built-in appearance as a standard ceiling cassette but is designed for homes with limited space above the ceiling. It's a smart choice if one of your five spaces is a finished basement, a remodel, or another area where ceiling depth is limited.

  • Concealed Duct Air Handler: Concealed duct indoor units are hidden from view, installed above the ceiling, with only discreet ceiling registers visible. This setup suits homeowners who want to maintain the look of traditional central HVAC in one or two rooms while benefiting from the comfort and efficiency of zoned heating and cooling.

  • Floor Mounted Air Handler: Floor mount units offer a practical solution for any of your five spaces that has limited wall or ceiling space. They're often installed low on walls and work well under windows, in rooms with sloped ceilings, or where wall-mounted units aren't feasible. They can also replace old baseboard or radiator heating systems during renovation projects.

With HVACDirect.com’s “Design Your Own System” tool, you can select different air handler types for each of your five spaces. This helps you personalize your system to every room’s specific layout and needs.

What power requirements do ACiQ 5 zone mini split systems need?

These systems require a dedicated 208/230V circuit, with breaker sizing and wire gauge determined strictly by the MOCP and MCA values on the outdoor unit's nameplate. General requirements include:

  • Voltage: All ACiQ 5 zone outdoor units operate on 208/230V single-phase, 60 Hz power on a dedicated circuit. Standard 120V household circuits are not compatible with any ACiQ multi-zone outdoor unit at any BTU size.

  • Amperage and Breaker Size: Breaker sizing is governed by the Maximum Overcurrent Protection (MOCP) listed on the unit's data plate. For ACiQ 5 zone systems at 36,000 BTU, the MOCP typically falls between 20 and 30 amps. Systems at 48,000 BTU generally require a 30- to 40-amp dedicated breaker. The 55,000 BTU outdoor units may require a 40- to 60-amp breaker. Always use the MOCP on your unit's nameplate rather than these general ranges, as the exact size you need depends on your specific model and series.

  • Wiring Size: Wire gauge must comply with the unit's Minimum Circuit Ampacity (MCA) and the National Electrical Code. For lower-amp circuits, 12 AWG copper wire is typically used, while medium- and larger-amp circuits use 10 or 8 AWG copper wire.

  • Disconnect Box: National electrical codes mandate the installation of a dedicated, outdoor-rated, non-fused electrical disconnect box mounted within direct line of sight of the condenser unit of these systems. It should be weatherproof and properly sized to the unit’s electrical requirements.

A licensed electrician must confirm wire gauge, breaker sizing, and disconnect placement for your specific installation before any work begins, as local code requirements and line run lengths can affect the final specifications.

FAQs about ACiQ 5 zone mini split systems

ACiQ mini splits for 5 zones are very energy-efficient for both heating and cooling, with both the Standard and Extreme series achieving HSPF2 ratings of around 10 and SEER2 ratings of 18 to 24. Their inverter-driven rotary compressors dynamically adjust operating speeds to match your thermal loads, bypassing the expensive energy surges that traditional on/off central systems trigger.

ACiQ mini split systems are rebranded units primarily manufactured by Midea, a massive global HVAC manufacturer that also supplies components for various other well-known industry brands. ACiQ is a brand owned by International Comfort Products (ICP), a subsidiary of Carrier Global Corporation, one of the largest HVAC manufacturers in the world with operations across more than 195 countries. The brand was developed to deliver premium mini split performance at a competitive price point.

ACiQ does not offer a DIY version of its 5 zone systems. All 5 zone condensers require professional refrigerant vacuuming and startup by a certified technician, and registering the system within 90 days of installation is required to unlock the full extended warranty coverage. Physical prep and mounting work can be handled by a capable homeowner, but the refrigerant connections and electrical circuit must be completed by licensed professionals, regardless.

Warranty coverage for ACiQ 5 room systems varies by product series, purchase source, and registration status, so verifying the terms for your specific model before purchasing is important. Standard and Extreme series systems include a 12-year compressor warranty and a 7-year parts warranty when purchased through an authorized retailer and registered within 90 days of installation. If the system is not registered within that window, coverage defaults to a 5-year compressor warranty and 5-year parts warranty. Systems purchased through an ACiQ Dealer Program contractor may also qualify for an extended 12-year parts warranty, so asking your contractor about that option at the time of purchase is worthwhile.

Most ACiQ mini splits, including those for five spaces, are heat pumps, meaning they can provide both heating and cooling. They do this by transferring heat instead of generating it. In cooling mode, the system absorbs indoor heat and transfers it outside, and in heating mode, it reverses the process. Each of the 5 indoor air handlers can be controlled separately, letting you heat or cool individual rooms to different temperatures. The Extreme series models feature advanced base pan heaters and can extract outdoor thermal energy to heat a home even when external temperatures plunge as low as -22°F.

ACiQ 5 zone systems are built to last 15 to 20 years under normal operating conditions with consistent maintenance. They have Gold Fin® coating on the outdoor unit’s coils, which makes the system more durable to weather conditions. Staying on top of filter cleaning across all five indoor units and scheduling annual professional service are the most reliable ways to reach the upper end of that range.

ACiQ 5 zone indoor units operate between 24 and 45 dB(A), depending on fan speed, with the lower end comparable to rustling leaves and the highest setting around the level of a quiet library. Outdoor units range from 59 to 65 dB(A) across the Standard and Extreme series, roughly equivalent to a normal conversation, and through closed windows, most people stop noticing the outdoor unit entirely. Because each zone runs independently, bedroom units can be dropped to ultra-quiet sleep mode at night while living area units continue running at higher speeds without affecting each other.

Yes, every one of these indoor units comes equipped with a dedicated “Dry Mode” setting on its wireless remote control. This setting lowers the internal blower fan speed to strip excess moisture out of the air stream without over-cooling your room. Every indoor unit also removes humidity as a natural byproduct of the cooling cycle: as warm, humid room air passes over the cold coil, moisture condenses and drains automatically through the condensate line.

You should pop open the front plastic faceplates on your indoor air handlers, slide out the reusable mesh filters, rinse them, and air-dry them every 2 to 4 weeks. A deeper professional service call to chemically cleanse the internal coil networks and clean out the outdoor fins should be scheduled once a year.

These systems are designed to heat and cool five rooms or zones. In some open-concept layouts, a single indoor unit may adequately condition two connected areas, such as a kitchen and dining room. However, 5 room ACiQ systems officially support only five indoor units. If there are obstructions, you should upgrade to a 6 zone system.
